This book has a lot of symbolism - particularly with ligth. Think about the first chapters. There were many references to light.
For example:
  • "The light was shining onto the ceiling in an oval of brilliance, and he was smiling up at the sight." (p.13)
  • "He was staring at the light pouring in through the stained-glass windows of the castle...What is this thing?...Are we in heaven?" (20-21)
  • "You will die, then with a black heart." (56)
  • "Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark." (81)
What do you think light might mean in the story. Goodness? Beauty? What does dark mean? Does Despereaux really have a black heart?

    In this story I think the word light means good and like it might show that the mouse is a trustful and respectful mouse. And darkness would be bad and angry because the rats live in the dungeon and its so dark in there.And when the countess sends Desperaux in the dungeon he meets thousand s of rats and inside the dungeon there arent any windows no light at all!!!!! So this makes deseraux seem like a bad persom with a dark heart. Plus,he misses princess Pea and he will ne er see her again I wonder what might happen in chapter 13 perfidy unlimited desperaux own brother worked for the counsell adn so he had to watch desperaux suffer in the dungeon I cant believe his wn brother did that wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    In the story, light is a symbol of happiness. Whenever Desperaux is in a beam of light, he wants to be filled with the warmth of the light.
    The dark would be everything that is not good and everything that is not happy.
    I do not think that Desperaux has a black heart. He's just...different.

    dont really think Desperaux ha a dark heart because he is in love and the rats dont think love is important and since they live in the dungeon they have evil and badness and there hearts but since Desperaux is a mouse theat ives upstairsx and not int he dungeon then he has a good heart but when one of the rat goes upstairs in the LIGHT! I also think light migt be like a signal of telling someone you are trustful,respectful and so on adn if you live on the dungeon that ells people that you are bad,sneaky,mean,a theif and so on.

    Desperaux has a good heart he is kind and brave he is helpful to.Plus all the moses that were born upstairs and not in the dungeon are good.Roscuro has a bad heart though he is trying to make up a plan with miggery sow to get rid of the princess and lick her in the dungeon FOREVER!!! So Roscuro is trying to get revenge.Miggery sow used to be a princess but now she isnt she is a servant for the princess so she is trying to get revenge to becuase of the rat that killed her mother.So no longer is she a princess.But I predict Desperaux is going to escape from the dungeon and convince Miggery sow not to do that because princesses are good NOT evil!!!

    i thinnk light means beautiful happyness. i think darkness means horifing and meaness.
